Wowie Maui

Did anyone get a load of that Moon last night? It's been so beautiful and shiny and big lately, but last night especially took my breath away. Some nights, like last night, it's just so much more obvious than normal that Earth is in the Universe. Sure, we feel the Sun's heat and we hear about Pluto getting kicked out of the planet club and we listen to exciting news about light waves being emitted from black holes and asteroids and supernova and binary systems and on and on and on....but then there are moments like last night when you look up to a clear sky and a Moon that's so obviously 3D, and you see the detail of the craters and valleys and seas of Moon-dust on that land. It's then that you realize that for 23 hours and 56 minutes of the past day you had been subconciously considering Southern California as all that existed in the Universe. You gaze in silent humility and awe as you reflect on how mistaken you were in your subconcious consideration. Studying the craters on the Moon's surface makes you think of the asteroids that caused them, and then you remember the asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, then your mind's eye spans farther back to include our entire solar system. Almost simply for the adreneline rush you force your mind's eye to then look straight up, and your legs almost go weak as you consider the depth of the Universe and the microscopic teeniness of us. And you take comfort in knowing that the very God who holds ALL of it in the stretch of His hand (Isaiah 40:12) loves you intimately and desires for you to get to know Him and love Him as much as possible.

All of THAT is why I've been wanting to be an astronaut. But, I think I should have been born 50-100 years later, when deep-space travel is remotely possible.

Harrison, normally I wouldn't blog on a Tuesday evening. But I realized I better if I want to get you to start reading my blog again. I'm not sure of the consequences of you not reading my blog, but I assume that maybe I wouldn't want to know.
